MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. — After taking in more than 100 dogs last week, the McCracken County Humane Society is asking the community to support them by donating supplies, fostering and adopting.

Kennel worker David Boggs said the shelter now has 253 animals and only 89 kennels. While the animals that were recently brought in are part of an active investigation and cannot be adopted out until the case wraps up, the dogs that were already at the humane society are open for both adoption and fostering.

The shelter was already over-capacity before taking in more than 100 dogs on Friday. Pictured is one of the dogs that was already at the shelter. Photo taken May 7, 2025, in McCracken County, Ky.

“Two-hundred fifty-three dogs with 89 kennels. We need to get some of those kennels open so we can get some of the dogs that may not. We can get all the dogs shown that are available for adoption. So that's why it's very important to get those kennels open,” said Boggs. “We're very much overwhelmed, and we're just trying to take care of the dogs in the best way we possibly can.”

Boggs said there are benefits to adopting a pet.

“Dogs, cats, whatever. You know, studies show that it lowers your blood pressure. It just makes us happy you're human. So that's the main reason to adopt a dog. And there's so many dogs that need homes, we'd much rather folks adopt from us than buy, you know, from a breeder,” said Boggs.

Until the court case is finished, the humane society must feed and care for the more than 100 new animals, but cannot focus on finding them homes. So, the dogs may be at the humane society for months.

“Because those dogs are still going to be here. You know, if it's an active court investigation, this could take several weeks, couple of, three months, who knows? You know, we don't know how the legal process is going to work in that so these dogs are going to be here, and even if these dogs aren't going to be here, we're still going to have dogs, you know, so, and it takes a village to to take care of all these dogs,” said Boggs.

Cotton said she donates to help other animals that don't have homes yet. Photo taken May 7, 2025, in McCracken County, Ky.

Judy Cotton came to donate to help other animals at the humane society. She said she hopes to help the animals that have not found homes yet.

“Everybody needs to step up and help other pets even though they're not yours. They still need love. They need to be cared about. And it would be nice if all of the pets over here could get a nice loving home,” said Cotton.

To help the humane society, you can volunteer, donate and foster/adopt available pets.

All volunteers must fill out an application; have had a tetanus shot; and if they are 16 or younger, they must be accompanied by a parent.
