Each week, Maine's Total Coverage features an adoptable pet from the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. This week's featured pet is Appa, a 2-year-old dog who loves attention, pets and giving kisses. Matt Blanchard of the Animal Refuge League said Appa is a “big, goofy guy” with a very happy demeanor and loves people.Blanchard added that Appa is a great family dog who has lived with children before and has done well with other dogs.Appa is pretty strong and he weighs just over 60 pounds, so Blanchard said his new family needs to be ready to handle him. Appa also enjoys running around, so it would be great if his new home had a big yard to explore.”We just want to make sure that if you're going to take him home, you bring either your kids or dogs to the shelter,” Blanchard said. “We'll do the meet-and-greet there and make sure it's a good fit.”More information about Appa is available on the Animal Refuge League's website.Anyone who is interested in meeting Appa can visit the ARL of Greater Portland's shelter at 217 Landing Road in Westbrook between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. except on Wednesdays, when the shelter is closed for adoptions. The ARL of Greater Portland does adoptions on a first-come, first-served basis. On the days the shelter is open, sign-in sheets will be placed on the front door at 9 a.m. to track the order of arrival of adopters who show up early. People who arrive early are asked to remain on the campus once they sign in.Dog owners who are interested in adopting dogs that are older than 6 months, which includes Appa, are required to have their dogs meet the adoptable pet before they can be brought home.Good news!Blanchard informed Maine's Total Coverage that last week's featured adoptable pet, an 8-month-old puppy named Kiki, has found a new home.
