Panaji: In a heartwarming story of friendship and loyalty, a family in Merces in Tiswadi taluka has recounted their remarkable journey with a pet crow named Tom. The unusual tale began with a routine call to the fire department regarding a large tree that had fallen, blocking traffic and creating a hazard for motorists. Upon arrival, the fire crew discovered an unexpected addition to their task: a baby crow that had tumbled from the very tree they were clearing.
The situation took a personal turn when the fire service contacted Francisco Xavier Azavedo, stationed at the St Inez fire station. They informed him of the crow’s dire circumstances and potential threats from predators such as cats, dogs, and snakes. Concerned for the bird’s survival, Azavedo agreed to take it in and instructed the team to bring the baby crow along.
His daughter Celfra Azavedo says the day the crow, later named Tom, arrived, he became an integral part of their family.
Over the past 18 years, Tom has adapted to life with the Azavedos, developing distinct habits and forging a deep bond with them. Celfra recalls how Tom seamlessly integrated into their daily life, becoming a cherished part of her childhood. She fondly remembers Tom mimicking scenes from her favourite cartoons, particularly ‘Tom and Jerry’. The playful crow seemed to engage with the antics of the cartoon characters, adding joy to her days.
“As a child, I was fascinated by his antics, and he became a cherished part of my childhood,” Celfra says.
One of Tom’s endearing habits was its interaction with Celfra’s school bag. Each morning, the bird would perch on the school bag, as if to bid her farewell, and upon her return, he would often untie her shoelaces—a playful trademark of his.
Tom’s intelligence, playfulness, and ability to mimic human behaviour have continually amazed the Azavedos. He would switch on lights, whistle like his owners, and even mimic their voices,
Tom’s quirks also include a particular fondness for Limca soft drink, which he requests with a distinctive crackling sound. The Azavedos have grown adept at understanding his gestures and language over the years. They also recounted how a kind doctor had once nursed Tom back to health after an injury during his early days.
The bird’s daily routine involves a ritualistic shower demand before the Azavedos leave the house, pecking at them until they comply. The unique personality and antics have made Tom a local celebrity, with many inquiring about his well-being.
The family celebrates his ‘birthday’ with a special cake from a local bakery, alongside their other pets. Their experience with Tom has taught them the profound value of connecting with birds and animals and they are grateful for the opportunity to share their lives with such an extraordinary creature.
