More than 100 dogs in need of homes at Lake County shelter

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – Milk-Bone with peanut butter is the “go-to” snack for dogs at the Lake County Animal Shelter.

Volunteers are not only making sure their tummies are full, but they are also on another mission: to get them a forever home.

“We need adopters. We need foster parents, and we need owners to come looking for their pets. The mass majority of our dogs are coming in because they are found roaming,” said Whitney Boylston, director of Lake County Animal Services.

Boylston said they are 70% above capacity at the shelter and are housing nearly 170 dogs, some as young as 12 weeks old.

“It’s really not about an increase in our admissions, what’s going on nationally is an increase in our length of stay. So, dogs that used to spend minutes or hours at the shelter are spending days or weeks,” Boylston said.

Boylston said people can help by:

• Adopting

• Fostering.

• Volunteering.

• Sharing information on social media.

• Taking proactive steps when they lose or find a pet.

The shelter is also waiving fees through the end of the month for adoption and reclaim.

Boylston also wants to remind people to check their pet’s microchip because there are many dogs with unregistered microchips and are unable to reunite with their families.

“If somebody is missing a pet, we want them to check our website, come in person to see if they have their dog here and of course, taking advantage of services,” she said.
