Cats make fantastic pets but when they start pooping in your garden, it's anything but pleasant.

Flower beds, pot plants, lawns and even gravel are some of the places cats like to relieve themselves in your garden.

Luckily, gardeners have shared their tips for deterring cats from fouling in gardens.

On a Facebook community group, Donna Maria Tina Nicol posted: “Hi, does anyone know how to deter cats and foxes from fouling on my lawn it's so bad? Thank you in advance.”

The post was inundated with more than 140 comments from people who claimed the best deterrent was citrus peel.

Vivienne Lewis-Abel said: “Had this problem with cats. Put orange and lemon peel around the front garden. None since.”

Jessica Debono replied: “They don’t like citrus. I used lemon-scented bin smelly powder stuff and it kept the foxes away.”

James Beadles commented: “Orange peel. It works a treat!”

Jill Jones suggested: “Cats and dogs don't like citrus. Orange, lemon or lime peel will help.

“Pure lemon or lime juice sprayed about will also be a deterrent. Not sure about foxes but I would assume the same rules apply.”

Lemons can be bought from most local supermarkets or online for as little as 23p.

Asda's Large Unwaxed Lemons cost 69p for three which works out at 23p per lemon. Lemons can also be bought from Sainsbury's for 30p each.

Other suggestions from gardening fans included using pepper, garlic and chillies.

Angelina Kemp said: “Pepper. Random I know. But we had just put new turf down and the foxes really took to it. Someone suggested pepper and it actually worked.”

Chris Blyth replied: “I used garlic granules worked in my garden.”

Shelly Bond commented: “Put chillies in water and spray your lawn.”

Mandy Newman posted: “Pepper works for me…but have to do every couple days. When it rains do it again. Hope this helps.”
