Neighbors rescue pets from destructive Glendale house fire

GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A Glendale family of three is now without a place to call home after a destructive fire ripped through their house Sunday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m., the Phoenix Fire Department received a call about a house fire near 43rd Avenue and Bell Road. When they arrived, crews saw heavy smoke coming from the roofline.

The homeowner told Arizona’s Family that she, her husband and their daughter were not home then, but their two dogs were inside.

She said a handful of her neighbors got her pets out safely. Xavier Hicks was one of those heroic neighbors.

“Between my wife and a couple other neighbors, the priority was to get the dogs out and make sure they were safe,” said Hicks.

He said the neighbors also used water hoses to tackle the fire until crews arrived. His wife captured their actions on her cellphone’s camera.

One of the homeowners said neighbors called her about the fire and said she saw the smoke while driving towards the house.

She said she was in shock and brought to tears when she said this all happened on her husband’s birthday.

“I can’t imagine, what if it was my home that I came to and found everything destroyed and in upheaval. I just can’t even imagine what they must be going through right now. It’s awful,” said neighbor Raymond Edie.

The family was seen gathering a few items not damaged by the fire and loading them into their car. Hicks said he feels sorry for them but said they’re like family, and neighbors will support them.

“I know as a community, we’re going to do our best to take care of them,” said Hicks.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
