A new initiative to manage the growing number of stray dogs in Famagusta has taken a step forward. The commissioner for the environment and animal welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, met with the mayor of Paralimni-Deryneia, Giorgos Nikolettos, to discuss urgent measures, including the creation of a temporary shelter for abandoned dogs.
In a statement on Friday, the municipality confirmed that officials explored ways to improve stray dog management. The discussion focused on enforcing laws requiring pet owners to register their dogs and obtain proper licences, a measure aimed at preventing abandonment.
Mayor Nikolettos described the project as a vital step towards responsible pet ownership.
“This initiative will help address the serious issue of abandoned dogs and promote awareness among owners,” he said.
Both the mayor and the commissioner reaffirmed their commitment to working together, not only on animal welfare but also on wider environmental issues affecting the district.
The proposed shelter is expected to provide a safe space for stray dogs while efforts continue to find them permanent homes. Further details on the timeline and funding for the project are yet to be announced.
