ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) – Kids got a closer look at reptiles in Ishpeming on Tuesday.
Northern Scales Reptiles held a reptile pet care presentation. Families looked at snakes, turtles and lizards to see if they’re pets fit for them.
Employee Easton Zivnoska says many people have misunderstandings around reptile ownership. One habit he’s seen is people feeding tortoises lettuce, which doesn’t have enough nutrients. Zivnoska recommends collard greens instead.
He says another thing to keep in mind is that owning a reptile is a huge commitment, since reptiles can live a long time.
“So, a lot of the time at the store, we get a lot of people that have drop-offs,” Zivnoska said. “It’s an animal that they’re like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know if I wanted to commit to it that much. I thought it’d be a year or two, but it’s live on ten to twenty years now.’”
He says reptile ownership is about respect.
