Not all dogs cause allergies: These breeds are more tolerable for people who are allergic to pets

Pet owners who suffer from allergies have a number of options to help relieve their symptoms, from grooming changes to medication.

An allergic reaction to a dog or cat can cause a series of symptoms from sneezing, nasal congestion through to itchy eyes and these are body’s response to an allergen, such as pet dander or the microscopic, shed skin cells of animals with fur.

Studies show that about 30% of Americans have pet allergies and it’s twice as likely for a person to be allergic to a cat than a dog.

Changes to help relieve pet allergy symptoms

One of the key areas is to restrict the pet to very specific areas and avoid letting the animal into the bedroom.

Constantly washing one’s hands and hoovering the house using a vacuum with a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter can help cut down on allergens.

Whilst experts maintain that there is no truly allergy-free cat or dog, the American Kennel Club maintain that there are certain breeds of dog that are more tolerable for owners with allergies and these are less-allergenic purebred dogs do exist such as poodles, Yorkshire terriers, Bichon frise, Maltese and schnauzers.
