Not only for fur babies, fish gets pampering

IT is not uncommon to groom your pet cat, dog, rabbit or even chicken – but what about fish?

For Wan Muhammad Afendy Wan Daud, 31, it all started when he treated his own Arowana fish with swollen gills.

Now the hobby has turned into a small business for the factory worker.

After sharing a video via TikTok of him grooming a fish, Wan Muhammad Afendy did not expect it to be well received.

A 39-second video showing grooming activities on a bluish-gold Arowana was viewed 4.4 million times.

“I learnt how to treat fish from YouTube and experienced people.

“At first, I was reluctant because the price of this fish reaches thousands of ringgit; it is a risk if you make a mistake.

“But at the insistence of many, I tried. I didn’t think I would now become an expert Arowana fish groomer,” he told Sinar Harian.

The Kota Baru native said before grooming, the fish should be put to sleep first.

“The fish should be injected with anaesthetic and the water used must also contain anaesthesia during the treatment to remove scales that are attacked by fungus.”

He can also correct the mouth of the fish, whose lower jaw is longer than the upper, and remove the fat that causes the fish’s eyes to fall.

“All of this requires a high level of precision because if you make a mistake, it can cause the fish to go blind or even die,” he said.

He added that booking packages to groom Arowana fish will only be done on Sundays with fees starting from RM50 up to RM300, not including travel charges.

> Laksamana Saad has made efforts to preserve the 200-year-old Perlis Gantang (bushel), which belonged to his great-grandparents, Utusan Malaysia reported.

The bushel is a measuring tool used during trading in the olden days and in Tanah Melayu, it was used for the buying and selling of rice.

Usually made from wood, the bushel was widely used prior to the metric system, which was introduced in 1972.

The bushel even has two emblems attached to it alongside with the measuring tool.

“This gantang is a family heirloom passed down generations.”
