ELKINS — Authorities are seeking help from the public in gathering information after a dog was found shot in the area of Highland Park on Tuesday.
Randolph County Humane Officer Ron Gooden told The Inter-Mountain Wednesday that he responded to a call at approximately 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, in reference to what appeared to be a dog found beside the Randolph County Housing Authority.
Once Gooden arrived at the North Randolph Avenue location, he discovered a brown Boxer face down next to the parking area of the facility.
“After assessing the dog and checking the surrounding area, it was discovered that the dog was deceased with an apparent gunshot wound to its side,” Gooden said. “Right now we are not sure what caliber of firearm was used in the incident.”
Gooden added the shooting is under investigation and that he is seeking the public’s assistance in helping solve the case.
“At this time what we are looking for is any leads,” Gooden said. “The dog was let out around 6 a.m. and it was discovered around 7:30 a.m. by employees at the Randolph County Housing Authority.”
Gooden said the owners of the dog have been located. He noted the animal was a family pet, who was approximately 12 years old.
“Any little thing that someone may have heard or seen out of the ordinary can assist in the investigation,” said Gooden. “The family is just looking for answers right now and we are going to continue to investigate it and follow any leads that we may get.”
Gooden described the dog as a full-sized boxer that was wearing a grey collar. He said even the smallest tip could help in his investigation of finding out why the dog was shot.
“From a few leads that we have received up until now, we are focusing on the Charles Street area of Highland Park, up to the Rail Trail,” Gooden said. “Anyone in that vicinity that may have heard, seen or have something on a video camera outside their home, are asked to contact me. The smallest little thing could help us find out what happened.”
Gooden can be reached at 304-704-5204. Leads or tips can also be called in to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office at 304-636-2100.
