In the heart of New Taipei City, Taiwan, a revolutionary pet-friendly home has taken shape. “Once Upon a Treetop,” designed by AODA Design, is a testament to the power of innovative design in creating harmonious living spaces for humans and their beloved pets. The project’s inception was inspired by two roommates and their four cats and two medium-to-large dogs, who previously lived in a rental property where the lack of vertical separation led to behavioral issues among the animals.
The clients’ plea for a permanent home that catered to their pets’ needs was answered by the design team, who deeply understood the importance of balancing the spatial requirements of six animals within a limited indoor area. The design concept was simple yet effective: create a harmonious living environment where every member of the household could thrive.
To achieve this, the designers distinguished the movement paths of humans and dogs, and humans and cats, ensuring that each member had sufficient space to live and rest without sacrificing companionship and intimacy. The introduction of vertical elements such as cat trees, elevated walkways, and multi-level platforms provided the necessary space for the cats to climb and explore, adding visual interest and unique aesthetics to the home.
The selection of materials played a crucial role in creating a pet-friendly and durable interior. Scratch-resistant and non-slip surfaces, non-toxic and washable finishes, and natural materials like wood and stone were incorporated to ensure the health, safety, and comfort of both humans and animals. The result is a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is both functional and visually stunning.
The design concept for “Once Upon a Treetop” is to create a harmonious living environment for humans and their pets. Given the large number of animals, we first distinguished the movement paths of humans and dogs, and humans and cats, ensuring every member has enough space to live and rest without losing companionship and intimacy.
“Once Upon a Treetop” is a shining example of the possibilities that arise when designers, clients, and animals come together to create a shared vision. This remarkable project serves as a beacon of inspiration for pet owners and designers alike, proving that with creativity and innovation, harmonious coexistence is not only possible but also beautifully achievable.
