Local councillor in Tullamore hits out at owners who don't clean up after dogs
OUTRAGEOUS.
That's the verdict of Tullamore based councillor on pet owners who don't clean up after the dogs foul streets and estates in the county town.
“The situation is outrageous at the moment,” said Cllr Declan Harvey.
“With the weather being so bright after a spell of bad conditions the problem seems to be more noticeable in the town than ever before,” he added.
Cllr Harvey made his comments after it emerged no fines had been issued for dog fouling in Offaly last year or in 2023 or 2022.
The Fianna Fail public representative said he was calling on the council to take immediate action to tackle the problem.
“I'm also calling on the general public to report sightings of dogs fouling in the town when their owners don't clean up after them,” he outlined.
Cllr Harvey said it was plain bad manners on the part of dog owners who didn't clean up after their pets while out walking.
He said that in his own area – north of the Grand Canal – some dogs seemed to have favourite spots “to do their business” outside people's homes.

Cllr Harvey added that Tullamore was now performing very well in the Tidy Towns and Irish Business Against Litter competitions and the hard-working volunteers were dismayed by the action of some, but not all, pet owners.
