A total of 171 pets received free anti-rabies vaccinations and health check-ups at the Pet Life Care Veterinary Clinic, Dimapur, on the occasion of “World Rabies Day” on September 28.

In addition to vaccinations and free health check-ups, pet owners also received free deworming pills and other goodies as part of the initiative. Pet Life Care collaborated with Sky FC and Areion Vet for the event.

Demonstrating the growing trend of pet ownership in the state, several pets of various breeds were brought to the clinic during the occasion, with owners ranging from young children to the elderly.

The pets were mostly dogs, though there was considerable number of cats as well.

“On account of World Rabies Day, we wanted to raise awareness about rabies prevention and the importance of vaccination, as it is a zoonotic disease,” informed Dr Limainla Longchar of Pet Life Care. 

“Today, safe and efficacious animal and human vaccines are among the important tools that exist to eliminate human deaths from rabies, while awareness is the key driver for the success of communities in engaging in effective rabies prevention,” she stressed.

Dr Longchar also mentioned that the clinic offers a range of services on regular days, including health check-ups, vaccinations, blood tests, spaying and neutering, and grooming. Details regarding these services can be obtained by contacting the help desk at 98632 0917.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of World Rabies Day, some other clinics in Dimapur also offered similar services. Among them, the Veterinary Health Care Centre, located near Old Dhansiri Bridge, provided free anti-rabies vaccinations and health check-ups.
Similar initiatives were held across the State.  

The National Rabies Control Program (NRCP) under Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur in collaboration with Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Dimapur District the day at at Council Hall, Kuda village, C-Khel.

Apart from mass vaccination drive for dogs, participants were oriented on measures to be taken after a dog bite as well as importance of rabies vaccine at the event. 

Promoted by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control and recognised by the WHO, the World Rabies Day is observed annually on September 28 to raise awareness about rabies prevention and highlight progress in combating the disease. The theme for 2024 was “Breaking Rabies Boundaries.” 

The day also marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur's death, the French chemist and microbiologist who developed the first rabies vaccine.
