Owner wants answers after whippet mix mauled by larger dog in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police are investigating after receiving reports that an 80-pound dog attacked an 11-pound whippet and toy terrier mix in the Poinsettia Heights neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale two weeks ago.

As you approach Donna Watson’s front door, a sign warns, “Attention, don’t knock on front door, injured animal inside.”

“She never told me there was a problem with the dog,” Watson said. “She never told me that her dog has been aggressive before. She never told me, ‘Oh I better not do that.’ The dog is what she calls ‘rambunctious.”'

Surveillance video captured the moment the larger dog attacked Watson’s pet, Brindy.

“I never made it out of my driveway, and the dog just lunged and grabbed her by the throat, threw her up in the air like a toy, slammed her down on the ground and jumped on her,” Watson said.

Watson told Local 10′s Hannah Yechivi that Brindy is now in a lot of pain, shock and severely injured.

“She has a severely sprained neck (and) when she puts her head down, her neck is swollen,” said Watson. “The lower back is also sprained.”

Brindy is now on a waiting list at the vet to determine if she will need surgery. Watson discovered this was not the first time the larger dog had attacked another dog.

“Two bites and all this aggression — this dog needs to be muzzled or taken for rehabilitation or medicines or something because this lady needs to be held accountable because she knows the behavior of the dog and she never warns anybody,” Watson said.

Police did not disclose the breed of the larger dog allegedly responsible for the attack.

Watson claims the owner of the larger dog never apologized or offered any help.

Attempts to contact the larger dog’s owner were unsuccessful as she was not home.

Watson told Local 10 she has filed a police report and hopes the owner will use a muzzle on her dog to prevent future attacks.
