Owners Didn’t Treat Injured Dog In Time, Vet Advised Euthanasia: Cops

PLAINFIELD, IL — A couple is accused of failing to care for their pet after they postponed treating their small dog's leg injury, leading to a vet advising it had to be euthanized, according to the Plainfield Police Department.

Brian W. Moisant, 47, and 45-year-old Amanda L. Manahan-Moisant, of Ninth Street in LaSalle, brought their dog, a small Yorkshire terrier, to Animal Medical Center in Plainfield on March 20, about two to three weeks after it sustained injuries, Commander Anthony Novak told Patch. The dog had a broken leg, an eye infection and severely matted fur.

Due to the extent of its injuries, the doctor of veterinary medicine at the clinic advised it would have to be euthanized, Novak said.

Brian and Amanda were issued a notice to appear for the offense of the Humane Care for Animals Act after Plainfield officers were called to the vet, located at 13813 S. Route 59, at about 12:26 p.m. March 20 for a call about animal neglect.

The owners estimated the injury happened two to three weeks prior but said they didn't bring the dog in sooner due to “work obligations and lack of money,” Novak told Patch.

A case was filed with the Will County Courthouse on April 10. Documents state the owners were charged with two counts of owner's duties after failing to provide veterinary care to prevent the dog's suffering.
