PAWS & REFLECT: Simple ways to build a bond with your dog | Lifestyles

Having a loving bond between you and your dog can be the difference between a lifetime of love and happiness and a stressful situation. Dogs bond easily to humans when they feel safe, loved and engaged.

The earlier in a dog’s life that bonding takes place, the better behaved he will be — and the more enjoyable to be around. If you are starting with a puppy, getting into a training class right away will help to establish your bond with your pup. During training, pups learn to take commands, who is “top dog” or pack leader, the rewards for doing what is asked of him and will look to you to set the tone in any environment.

Praising your dog and letting him know he is engaging in acceptable behavior also strengthens your bond. We continuously praise a pup when he does well, but as the dog ages, we sometimes forget to tell him that he is a good dog, even if it is for doing ordinary things such as chewing on an appropriate toy or letting you know when he needs to go outside. Dogs love compliments, pats and pets. This reminds your dog that you care about him.

Grooming and cuddling with your dog is a powerful way to increase the bond between you and your companion. Grooming, even though it is necessary, can be a stimulating and enjoyable time for your pet. Brushing, even a short haired dog, is typically very relaxing for the animal and serves a dual purpose of removing unwanted hair and dirt. Cuddling your dog, letting him sit with you while stroking his head or belly, can make a dog feel adored, encouraging him to be more attentive and attached to you.

There are many more ways to bond with your dog such as changing his routine, spending time doing new activities, or caring for his basic needs with proper diet and exercise. The bond between dog and man is known throughout the ages, and a modern-day version of man’s best friend can bring you much happiness and joy.
