People learn about dog breeds at Baton Rouge library

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Kennel Club along with other dog clubs in the area showcased their furry friends at the Main Library at Goodwood on Sunday, Feb. 18.

The free event was titled, Meet the Breeds and guests learned about different dog breeds, how to find the right one for their homes, and even tips on how to properly take care of and train the dogs.

Volunteers were excited to show off their pets. “There’s probably about 20 members. We’ve also got members of the Louisiana Capital City Obedience Club and some other volunteers. So probably about 50 people with their dogs,” said Chris Reed, Board of Directors Member of Baton Rouge Kennel Club.

The dogs were all different shapes and sizes, some with fur and some without. A few of the dogs even work around the city, helping those in the community. “He weighs 155 pounds. He’s nine years of age. He also works in the hospitals here in Baton Rouge, visiting the patients,” said Diane Sylvester, Baton Rouge Kennel Club member.

Many of the owners who came have been doing shows and events like this for quite some time and say that the dogs love it more than they do. They especially enjoy the attention. “He loves this, he’s been wanting to get everybody’s attention since he was a little puppy. And it’s just basically as he’s gotten older, his want and need for attention from other people has also grown,” said Brandon Winfield, Baton Rouge Kennel Club member.

The Baton Rouge Police Department came out to speak to families as well and showcase their K-9 dogs.
