A dog that left its owner seriously injured after mauling her face has been euthanised by authorities.

Sophine ‘Kitty’ Devile, 47, was attacked by her black six-year-old Saint Bernard-cross, Buster, at her home on Edith Street, in Leichhardt, about 12.20am on Wednesday.

She was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious condition with significant facial injuries.

Buster had remained at the property following the attack, but RSPCA NSW has confirmed he was removed on Thursday morning.

“The local council reached out and asked if RSPCA NSW could assist with this matter,” a RSPCA NSW spokesperson said.

“RSPCA NSW removed the dog from the property this morning and transported it to our Sydney shelter, where it was humanely euthanised.”

Shortly after the attack, paramedics were seen covering Devile’s face with a towel as she was rolled out of her home on a stretcher and ushered into the back of an ambulance.

Her pink pyjama pants were covered in blood.

Neighbours said they were awoken by the sound of a fire alarm and Devile screaming for help.

“I could hear her at the window screaming out for help like she was being attacked,” a neighbour told The Daily Telegraph.

“You could hear the kid and the mum both screaming for help, and the fire alarm going off, and the dog barking a little, we called triple-0 but weren’t actually sure what was going on.”

It’s understood the suggestion a fire alarm might’ve triggered the dog to attack is being investigated by council and police however the cause of the incident is yet to be confirmed.

Paramedics worked frantically on Devile, bandaging her face and arm — which appeared to have a significant gash — before rushing her to hospital.

Devile frequently doted on the family dog in posts online.

One post shows Buster cuddling up next to Devile’s young son, with the mother describing the pair as “bros for life”.

Other shots of the family pet show him curled up asleep on a pink blanket and posing with an orange bandana draped around his neck, alongside the caption: “Buster El cool guy”.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
