BASEHOR, Kan. (KCTV/Gray News) – A pet owner in Kansas says a regular trip to the dog groomer ended up turning into an emergency trip to the veterinarian.

The owner, who didn’t want to be identified, told KCTV that they took their dog named Dilly to an area groomer for his standard haircut.

But during the haircut, the animal was reportedly cut on his neck and front paw.

“I was shocked. I had to have my daughter take a picture of it,” Dilly’s owner said. “She immediately said we are going to the vet now.”

The owner’s niece, Maggie Yonker, said Dilly was injured while getting a haircut at Just for Dogs Grooming.

“They proceeded with the haircut as normal despite the fact that he was bleeding profusely,” Yonker said. “When they were done, they put him in a kennel. They called my aunt saying she could come pick him up. My aunt goes and picks him up and he has this giant cut on his body. They say it’s just a nick. She ended up getting him home and realizing just how bad it was.”

Dilly’s family said they took him to the veterinarian clinic next door to the groomers.

“The vet was shocked,” Dilly’s owner said. “He couldn’t believe he [Dilly] wasn’t screeching in pain.”

Yonker added, “The vet measured with his hands and said it was only a half centimeter from his [Dilly’s] jugular vein, which is absolutely insane.”

The family said Dilly had been a customer at Just for Dogs Grooming for years and never experienced something like this before.

According to the family, the groomer apologized and reimbursed them out of her own pocket, but they are still upset with the store manager who they say mishandled the situation.

“The store manager just blew it off, saying it was nothing, and didn’t even offer an apology,” Yonker said.

Just for Dogs Grooming did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the situation.

Several stitches later, Dilly is on the mend and back running around in the backyard. His owner says they won’t be returning to the business.

“I won’t be taking my dog back there and I have a lot of friends who won’t be going either,’ Dilly’s owner said.
