LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A retail pet store is seeking exemption from a new Louisville law that prohibits the sale of dogs and cats at pet stores.
Puppygram said they should be grandfathered in to avoid having to follow the law. Court documents show that Puppygram has been operating in Kentucky since 2022. In the filing Puppygram argues the law has no public benefit and could force the store to go out of business.
Metro Council members who supported the ban said it discourages overbreeding of pets and leads to more people to adopt from animal shelters.
A judge granted an injunction for Puppygram, meaning they can continue to sell pets while the case moves through the courts.
We reached out to both Puppygram and the city for comment and have not heard back from either.
