Petition for more lake access

Lisa LaBoucane wants better access to Kalamalka Lake, and so do hundreds of other people.

LaBoucane started an online petition asking the Regional District of North Okanagan and the District of Coldstream for better access for people and dogs.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the change.org petition had collected 426 signatures. The goal of the petition is currently 500 names.

On the petition page, LaBoucane said residents of Coldstream and the broader RDNO, have seen more limited access to Kalamalka Lake in the last number of years.

“In August of 2022, the District of Coldstream engaged in public consultation initiatives related to the community's vision for the North Kalamalka Neighbourhood Plan. Since that time, residents and visitors have only seen reduced safe and equitable access to our beautiful lake,” the petition claims.

“The District of Coldstream has decreased parking spaces, completely restricted off-leash dog swimming areas and has not added amenities, parks, sidewalks or launches. Residents are needing to drive to other areas, and there is more pressure on the provincial parks to provide services and parking. This is creating congestion and further safety issues.”

LaBoucane said this fall, Coldstream will develop some long-range planning and the Official Community Plan.

“It is time to speak up to ensure the District of Coldstream understands that area residents want improved, safe access to Kalamalka Lake.”

The petition is asking for:

  • Two access points or beaches that are approved off leash dog swimming areas, not including provincial parks
  • Increase safe access to beaches for residents who are walking or driving by adding amenities such as sidewalks
  • Provide opportunities for broader community feedback and input

Castanet has reached out to Coldstream Mayor Ruth Hoyte for comment.
