Doctor Clarissa Porter breaks down arthritis and orthopedic issues that dogs can develop over time.

MACON, Ga. — Dogs love to run, jump, and play, making them more prone to breaking bones or pulling ligaments. Doctor Clarissa Porter explains to owners how they can tell when their dogs are dealing with an orthopedic injury or chronic illness like arthritis.

“They can limp on that leg. They can stand and you'll notice that they kind of hold one leg further than the other to take pressure off that one leg. They can lick the area,” Porter said.

Porter said most dogs with arthritis have issues with their patella which is commonly known as the the knee cap. When dogs run or jump, the kneecap can easily slip out of place, causing inflammation and pain.

She doesn't recommend pet parents giving their dogs a baby aspirin due to the possible side effects of the medication.

“I don't usually suggest it because there's other conditions that can be exacerbated by aspirin,” Porter said.

Porter says taking your pet to their local vet is the best option if they are experiencing orthopedic issues. She says you should ask your vet about nutraceuticals, which are medicines added to your dog's food.

Also, glucosamine can help relieve aching joints and muscles, helping with the dog's mobility. If these nutraceuticals and supplements don't help there are other options that your vet may recommend.

Those options include laser therapy, acupuncture, and physical therapies like water therapy for dogs.

If you would like to know more about how you can help your pet stay active, you can visit The American Kennel Club for more tips.
