Thane: Two days after a five-year-old girl, Sana Shaikh, died after a pet Labrador fell on her from the fifth-floor terrace of her building, Mumbra police arrested the pet owner Zaher Sayed (24). Senior inspector Anil Shinde confirmed that the case was registered late on Thursday after the girl’s parents filed a complaint.
Sayed has been booked under Section 105 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and Section 291 for negligent conduct with respect to animals of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita.“We had taken a thorough legal review of the incident. Accordingly, Sayed is charged as the dog was in his custody and the negligence led to the death of the girl,” said a senior police official.
On Tuesday, around 4.30pm, Sana and her mother stepped out of Chirag Mansion A-Wing to exchange a packet of diapers at a shop when the dog fell on the girl from the B-Wing terrace, injuring her. The autopsy report confirmed that she died due to excessive bleeding from head injuries.
Police said they are trying to ascertain how the dog fell from the terrace. They are also verifying if Sayed, who allege-dly keeps several dogs on the terrace, had a pet licence from the civic body. The Labrador, which suffered multiple fractures, is recuperating at a resc-ue centre. Its condition is seri-ous, said activist Muzna S. tnn
