Police ID person who disposed dead dogs in Cottage Grove

In a Facebook post, investigators said they served a search warrant and obtained a confession, but questions remain as to how the dogs actually died.

COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. — Cottage Grove police say they have obtained a confession from a person who dumped the bodies of 8 deceased dogs near the Mississippi River, but questions remain about how the pets actually died and who is responsible.

In a post on Facebook, police said officers from the department and investigators from the Animal Humane Society served a search warrant at a residence in Cottage Grove Tuesday night, and “an individual involved” confessed to disposing of the dogs on Grey Cloud Island.

Police say they are still waiting for necropsy results to determine exactly how the dogs died but do not believe the person who dumped the animals was actually responsible for their deaths. The post also says investigators don't believe the dogs perished in Cottage Grove but did not provide details on why. Cottage Grove PD will be working with AHS humane investigators and an unnamed law enforcement agency as the probe continues.

While information on exactly what happened has not been released, the post seemed to suggest it may be related to a hoarding situation.

“We recognize there are individuals who love animals and become overwhelmed trying to help too many at once,” the Facebook post reads. “If you or someone you know is having difficulties caring for pets, please contact groups like the Animal Humane Society to help you rehome them.”
