JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – The city found a raccoon in northern Jonesboro on Tuesday, Oct. 8, that exhibited signs of Canine Distemper Virus.

CDV is a highly contagious and deadly disease for unvaccinated dogs.

It easily spreads to other animals by direct contact and airborne exposure.

Symptoms include seizures, paralysis, and neurological issues.

CDV affects cats differently, but Director of Jonesboro Animal Services Larry Rogers said the disease shows no mercy for dogs.

“We would say it’s practically a death sentence for the dog,” Rogers said. “If the dog [very rarely] makes it through, it will continue those problems from the disease throughout its life.”

Rogers said the number one prevention method is vaccinating your pets. It is recommended to keep them indoors, avoid contact with wildlife, and properly dispose of dead animals.
