Cochin: Pet owners are often stressed out about leaving their fur babies behind when they are travelling abroad. However, Cochin International Airport has become the first in Kerala to ease out rules for pets travelling abroad. In fact, one pet has already flown international from Cochin International Airport.
On Thursday, Luka the puppy, a Lhasa Apso breed dog, flew to Dubai via Doha in a Qatar Airways flight, that handled the pet cargo. Luka is the fur baby of Rajesh Susheelan and Kavitha Rajesh from Attingal in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Cochin International Airport has established a 24-hour air-conditioned pet station, a special cargo section, a veterinary doctor on call, a customs clearance centre and a facilitation centre for people who are travelling with their pets for export. With the new clearance to Cochin International Airport, pets can be carried as cargo in cages that have been specially crafted for them.
“We are trying to offer a comprehensive package to our passengers. As part of this, all passenger touchpoints have been automated and various value-added facilities have been established. The implementation of the animal import facility is underway. Also, sophisticated security systems like full-body scanners will be introduced soon,” S Suhas, the managing director of Cochin International Airport said.
Cochin International Airport’s initiative
Like Suhas said, the Cochin International Airport is now making efforts to also start the import facility for pets from abroad and for the same reason, an animal quarantine centre is currently in the making. Well, it is safe to say that pet owners will no longer need to leave a piece of their hearts behind in form of their pets. Travelling abroad just became easier for them, don’t you think? And all kudos to Cochin International Airport for that!
