TERRA ALTA, W.Va (WDTV) – A rabid fox has been reported in Preston County, according to the Preston County Health Department.
On April 28th, a fox and dog encounter led to the discovery in the Terra Alta area, officials said.
This is the first laboratory-confirmed rabies case in the county this year.
Health department officials are encouraging pet owners to ensure their cats and dogs are vaccinated by six months of age with a booster within one year of the initial vaccination and then every three years thereafter per WV Code §19-20A-2.
Officials also want to remind the public not to approach wild animals. If an exposure does happen, seek medical attention immediately.
If your pet is attacked by a wild animal, officials suggest wearing protective gloves if you must handle your animal and follow up with your veterinarian as needed.
