A massive recall of dry pet food (croquettes) for cats and dogs is underway in France amid fears of a salmonella outbreak.

The affected products come from several supermarkets including Intermarché, Carrefour, Cora, and E.Leclerc, in a variety of sizes and flavours.

In general, the products are store-brand, however brands including ‘Ultra Premium Direct’, ‘Orlando’ and ‘Companino' are also affected.

A full list of the affected products – of which there are dozens – can be found on the official RappelConso product recall site.

Official advice is not to give the product to your pets due to the risk of salmonella.

In most cases, the products can be returned to the store of purchase for a refund, with a deadline in the final week of February, although for some the deadline is in January.

Specific information for each supermarket and product can be found in the link above.

Salmonella can affect pets

The bacteria that causes salmonella was detected in a batch of some of the raw materials used to make the various pet foods, hence the wide recall. It is unknown which products are fully affected.

Whilst salmonella is uncommon in pets, they can still be affected.

If your pet has eaten one of the recalled products and exhibits a fever, diarrhoea, or vomiting, you should immediately contact a vet.

In addition, even if animals do not get sick themselves from the bacteria, they can spread salmonella through their fecal matter and saliva, potentially infecting humans.

Salmonella is a common cause for food recalls across France, including for cheeses and sausages earlier this year.
