SCHS Column: Shelter pets needing a home for the holidays | Community

There’s a chill in the air which means the holidays are near and there’s plenty of shelter pets who could benefit from a new home.

Every year for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Stephens County Humane Society asks the community to consider fostering a shelter pup over the long weekend. So, in place of our traditional afternoon outing as part of the Stephens County Humane Society’s Take Out Tuesday program, The Banner staff would like to present a few pups in need of a home or temporary foster for the holidays.

This week, we would like to introduce a couple of dogs with sweet and maybe slightly spicy, but playful personalities — Anthony, Motto Motto, Klover, Leslie and Jason.

Anthony is around a year old and a black Labrador retriever mixed breed. This boy could potentially have a little schnauzer mixed in, based off his fur coat. As a medium size dog, Anthony is a little timid at first meet, but is sweet and loving. With a gentle hand, he will draw in close for some extra cuddles.

Motto Motto, aka Mo Mo, is about 3 years old and a pit bull terrier. He can get excited, as he loves to run and play, but he can be calm and loving. As a treat motivated pup, Mo Mo trains easily and has already picked up a few commands, like sit.

According to the humane society, Mo Mo is potty trained, crate trained, walks well on a leash, is a true cuddle bug, does great with female dogs, loves to play, gentle and submissive, great with kids and he loves to play with anyone he meets. Mo Mo loves toys and to chew on bones. According to the humane society, he doesn’t chew on anything he’s not supposed to chew.

Klover, a 6-month hound terrier, dons a beautiful light and dark chocolate brown fur coat. This lovely girl is playful and full of joy for her new family. Klover enjoys fetching bones and chew toys in the yard and will bring them back to play.

Klover’s kennel mate, Leslie, is around 5 months old and a mixed breed. Leslie is a medium-size dog who dons a beautiful brindle coat with a gorgeous smile.

Both Klover and Leslie thrive in a social environment and they love to play with one another.

Jason is a two and a half month old mixed breed who will most likely grow in to a medium size dog.

According to the humane society, Jason is the largest pup from his litter, as well as a one of the sweetest.

Jason sports a handsome brindle coat and does great with his crate training.

While waiting patiently for his forever home, Jason has proved he is good with kids, large and small dogs, as well as cats.

While the shelter is seeking temporary fosters for Thanksgiving, anyone who is willing to be a foster for the long weekend can host a shelter dog from Monday, Nov. 25 through noon Nov. 29 or Nov. 30.

According to the humane society, even temporary housing can have a long-term positive effect for shelter pups.

For the felines

With Thanksgiving approaching, here’s a few tips to keep your feline friends safe. Beginning with securing any trash cans to keep cats from exploring any extra smells. Also, keep any electrical cords protected and cat-proof any decorations used for the holiday.

Watch for food items toxic to cats, such as onions, grapes and chocolate and keep a designated space in your home for your cat to retreat.

Additionally, avoid feeding your cat turkey or other human food and stick to regular feeding times for your cat during the holiday.

To inquire about any of the dogs or cats, or to set up an appointment, call 580-252-7387 between the Humane Society’s hours of noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and from noon to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. SCHS is open from noon to 2 p.m. on Sundays for adoptions only and closed on Monday for surgery day.
