Sebewaing is once again looking to establish a dog park in the village, with the help of votes and grant money.
The village of Sebewaing is continuing to look for ways to help fund its proposed dog park, with the Petsafe Unleashed grant award. In celebration of Petsafe's 25th anniversary as the world's leading pet brand, the company is holding a national contest where one lucky community will win a dog park.
Last year, Sebewaing was selected with 24 other cities across the United States to compete for the Petsafe “Bark for your Park” grant. This grant was given to the top four cities that received the most votes from community voting. Sebewaing did manage to beat out cities like Houston, Texas, and Maryville, Missouri, but came just short and missed out on the award.
Sebewaing dog park overseer Jeff Parsons said the support for the dog park and voting has been overwhelming, and they're encouraged to continue to look for funding so that the village can enjoy a new recreational activity. The dog park will help continue the excitement of revitalization of the downtown area and draw more people into the area, giving businesses more opportunities as well, he said.
Currently, the nearest dog parks for residents of Sebewaing are in Cass City or Bay City. The park is planned to be in the space where the former LMS Stamping plant was located on the corner of Union and Albert Street in downtown Sebewaing. The village is looking to have community dog events to engage dogs and their families, including generating revenue to supplement the funding from the village.
Each day from now until Nov. 30, residents of Sebeawing and other supporters of the community can vote once per day for the village on the Petsafe website. Contest winners will be announced on Dec. 5. The grand prize winner will receive a new park package valued at $50,000.
