Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan handed the sentence to Yong Chen Fah @ Joseph Yong, who pleaded guilty to injuring the dog at his home in Taman Donggongon, Penampang, on Dec 31, 2024.
Yong, who acted out of anger and claimed self-defence, admitted to hitting the Siberian Husky named Coby with a stick several times, causing severe injuries, including optic nerve damage and a ruptured eye.
The court heard that the dog’s owner, Brandon Tim Tony, rescued Coby with the help of his family and brought it for emergency treatment, while both parties lodged separate police reports on the same day.
Prosecuting Officer Francis Palikat said Yong’s actions were excessive and stressed the importance of animal welfare, adding that the dog’s owner is also expected to be charged next week.
