A seven-month-old girl has died in hospital after ‘being bitten’ by a pet dog.
The baby suffered ‘serious injuries to her head’ at a property in Coventry on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services arrived at the address within minutes of being alerted, West Midlands Police said.
The force added: “A seven-month-old baby girl received treatment at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to hospital for further treatment. Tragically, she died a short time later.
“The pet dog, which isn’t classed as a dangerous breed, was removed from the home and humanely destroyed.
“We are in the early stages of our investigation. Our thoughts remain with her family at this devastating time.”
Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance was also scrambled to the scene.
Some 16 people died as a result of dog attacks in the first nine months of 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics.
