Shelter pets shine as Haywood hosts adoption event with tours, prizes, and local vendors

Haywood County Animal Services held an adoption event today aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding shelter pets on April 26.

The event offered visitors a chance to tour the facility and adopt dogs for just $30. Attendees could also participate in a “kitten shower” by donating to the facility, with opportunities to win prizes such as discounted adoption fees and coupons.

Kristen Laesser, the community outreach coordinator for Haywood County, emphasized the importance of considering shelter dogs when looking for a pet.

“A lot of people don't realize how incredible some of the dogs can be,” said Laesser. “I think sometimes people have a stigma around shelter dogs and think, ‘Oh, if it's in the pound, it's mean, or it's something,' who knows. 90 percent of the dogs that come through these doors come through at no fault of their own. They come in because maybe their family can't afford it anymore, maybe there was a job change, maybe there was a move. These dogs are house trained, they're good with other animals. They're playful — they're fun.”

The event also featured appearances from local vendors, including Frozen Josie's Ice Cream and Woof Street Bistro.
