From December 31, 2023, it will be against the law to breed, sell, advertise, regime, abandon and allow an American Bully XL.

It comes after a spate of attacks by the breed, some of which were fatal, came under intense public scrutiny.

Footage posted to social media showed a number of XL Bullys completely out of control, in some instances without an owner in sight.

Experts say the breed isn't inherently bad but that a combination of poor ownership and ignorance of certain behaviours has led to the epidemic of aggression.

Regardless, they will soon be banned, but they are not the only breed responsible for a string of attacks up and down the country, which Express.co.uk has compiled in a searchable map.

Fatal attacks have occurred all over the country since 2020. Between January of that year and October 2023, 15 people died from dog bites.

Separate figures show that there were 9,277 hospital admissions across England where the patient had been bitten or struck by a dog in 2022/2023.

That was up from 8,819 the year before, and a record high, the number steadily increasing since 1998 when records began.

On average, in the last 20 years, there were around three fatal dog bites per year, yet in 2022 there were ten fatalities and eight so far this year.

Our interactive map below shows where these fatal attacks occurred, with a clear hotspot in the north-west of England, where six deadly attacks have taken place, mostly in Merseyside and Manchester. Express.co.uk has listed them below.

Jonathan Halstead, Greater Manchester, January 29, 2020, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Mastiff Cross

Mr Halstead, 35, was attacked by his pet Staffordshire Bull Terrier Bronson at his family home. Investigators believe that his dog launched at him after he suffered an epileptic fit.

Bella-Rae Birch, Merseyside, March 21, 2022, American Bully XL

Just 17 months old, little Bella was fatally attacked in her home by the family's American Bully XL.

Daniel John Twigg, Greater Manchester, May 15, 2022, Cane Corso

The three-year-old was discovered with serious injuries and surrounded by several dogs in the area outside his home when he was killed.

Ann Dunn, Merseyside October 3, 2022, American Bully XL

Ms Dunn was found in her home mauled to death by dogs. The 65-year-old had been hospitalised a year before because of a dog bite.

Jonathan Hogg, Greater Manchester, May 18, 2023, American Bully XL

The 37-year-old died in hospital after suffering huge bite wounds to his arm, leg, and head after his friend's American Bully XL turned on him.

Marie Stevens, Merseyside, September 3, 2023, Rottweilers

The 40-year-old was found dead at her Liverpool home after she sustained two bite wounds on her arms and legs after attempting to pet two Rottweilers.

Jane Williams, committee member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC), previously told Express.co.uk about the various things you should do if you ever encounter an aggressive dog.

Putting an object in between yourself and the dog, like a wall or a door, or a big object that can be manoeuvred to create distance is advised.

It is also helpful to create a distraction, perhaps with food or physical force, though the latter is generally advised against.

Loud noises can also help to divert an aggressive dog's attention, a car horn has the potential to disorientate it.
