STREETSVILLE, ONTARIO — Simmons Pet Food announced March 27 plans to shutter its canning facility in Streetsville by the end of 2024. The decision to close the facility reflects the company’s overarching strategic plan to centralize its operations, according to Simmons.
The closure will impact roughly 190 employees currently working at the Streetsville plant. Simmons noted it will be offering comprehensive support packages, which includes severance pay and career counseling, to all affected employees.
“Over the last three years, Simmons Pet Food has invested aggressively in expanding capacity and capabilities in Emporia, Kan., and Dubuque, Iowa, with the intent to strengthen and grow our business,” said Scott Salmon, president of Simmons Pet Food. “This is the next step in that strategic plan to position Simmons Pet Food as the most trusted industry partner. The Streetsville location has been an important part of our company’s history. We are deeply grateful for the hard work and dedication of all our team members in Streetsville and are fully committed to supporting them through this transition.”
Simmons’ primary canning facilities in Emporia and Dubuque are supported by recent investments in the company’s distribution hubs in Edgerton, Kan., and Dubuque. Moving forward, the company will also leverage optimized processes and automated packaging capabilities to continue supporting its customers and pet owners.
