Southend’s Charlie Boys Angels unveil plaque in memory of ‘heroic’ dog

Charlie Boy, who was sleeping rough with his owner in the city, was fatally injured in 2017 while protecting his owner.

Since then, a charity founded in his memory has worked to support homeless and vulnerable people with their pets.

Charlie Boys Angels volunteers help ensure pets have been de-wormed, fed, cared for and can stay with their owners when they move into temporary accommodation.

Charity founder Lynne Channell, 54, from Rayleigh, described the plaque unveiling in Short Street on Saturday as “absolutely perfect”.

She said: “I’m just over the moon that people can come and remember Charlie Boy.

“It’s now a place for people to lay flowers and pay their respects to him.

“Since his death, Charlie Boy has helped hundreds of people stay safe. We’ve not had an incident like the one that claimed his life since, thankfully.”

Dog ownership and homelessness cross over massively. There is a real need to help, so we offer free support, including general health checks and vet referrals if animals are found to be severely unwell.”
