OLIVETTE, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Almost two years after it handed over its main animal shelter to a non-profit, St. Louis County will be taking back control of the operations.
In December 2022, the Animal Protection Association (APA) took over the operations of the man St. Louis County Animal Shelter in Olivette. It came four years after an audit recommended a change in how the shelter should be run. In 2018, as part of that audit, the Missouri Department of Agriculture found the facility euthanized more than 1,000 dogs and cats in 2018, 25 percent of the pets it took in. The department also detailed incidents in which it claimed facility employees were requiring pet owners surrendering their animals to fill out paperwork indicating they agreed to their animal being euthanized, without knowing what they were signing.
Since the APA has run the shelter, the county says the partnership with APA has enabled 4,000 adoptions, placed more than 1,600 pets with foster families and improved the adoption process.
The APA says the move will allow it to increase shelter capacity in the St. Louis area.
