Buttonwood Nature Center is teaming up with Antietam Humane Society for a special StoryWalk event, according to a community announcement.

The event will take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Pine Hill Recreation Area, 12684 Mentzer Gap Road, Waynesboro. It's free and open to the public.

“Buttonwood is planning new quarterly StoryWalk events to mark each season in a meaningful way with extra fun and special activities,” said Mary Claire King, Buttonwood’s watershed science coordinator and the event organizer. “The June event celebrates summer — and our furry, four-legged friends.”

“In cooperation with Antietam Humane Society, kids will enjoy a guided walk along the story trail as they read a book and participate in fun activities while walking some amazing shelter dogs,” King said.

At the end of the walk, there will be time to play with the shelter dogs and give them some special treats.

Attendees should note that personal pets are not allowed during this event.

The story trail book is “Being a Dog: A Tail of Mindfulness” by Maria Gianferrari, illustrated by Pete Oswald. The story features a young child and a dog, experiencing every minute of the day to its fullest — from the second they wake up to the moment they fall asleep. Young readers will follow cues in the book — barking, wagging and sniffing.

All families are welcome, but activities are geared for preschool and elementary-age kids.

Buttonwood StoryWalks are supported by lead sponsor Julia S. Dawson. Other sponsors include Kathy Helfrick, with additional support from Today’s Horizon Fund contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation, Marge Kiersz, APX Enclosures, Don Gibe and Nancy Erlanson, and the family of the late Carolyn Terry Eddy, with daughters Connie Fleagle and Kim Larkin. Facility support is courtesy of Washington Township.
