Attingal: Residents in villages, including Chirayinkeezhu taluk, are raising alarm about stray dogs being released in their areas after supposed sterilisation efforts.
There have been complaints that dogs captured from towns are ending up in rural areas instead of being returned to where they were found. This has caused worries among locals because these dogs can become aggressive when they’re out of their familiar surroundings.

It’s been reported that some of these dogs might not even be getting sterilised before being released, which adds to the problems with stray dogs bothering people in different areas. People are upset because the dogs are supposed to go back to where they came from after getting sterilised, but that’s not happening.
The concern is that the population of dogs is steadily rising in Valakkadu, Chembur, Elamba School Road, and Oorupoika Road within the Mudakkal Panchayat. Similarly, dogs are being captured and released in various locations across Kizhuvilam Panchayat, including Nandavanam, Nedumbaram, Vellalur, and Karavaram under Nagaroor Panchayat.
A few months ago, locals observed dogs being released from a truck near Nagaroor Poikavila Bhagavathy Temple. When people approached, those responsible quickly left in a vehicle. The dogs had been transported in a truck with a concealed registration plate.
Even pet dogs are being abandoned in this manner. Besides roaming the streets, they often enter residential areas in search of food. In rural settings, stray dogs can freely enter homesteads as most do not have fencing in place. These groups of dogs often linger in backyards and on porches, posing a threat to the residents.
The issue is not just about dogs causing a nuisance; there’s also the concern about public safety, especially for children walking to school. There have been incidents where dogs have acted aggressively toward people.
Residents are calling for better surveillance of the sterilisation process and for action against those responsible for mishandling the release of these dogs. They also want authorities to make sure the right procedures are followed to keep their communities safe.
