SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) – Dorchester County Fire Rescue says a Summerville family has lost their home and four pets in a Sunday afternoon fire.

Summerville Fire-Rescue, Dorchester County Fire Rescue, C&B Fire and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at the 200 block of Cheyenne Road after getting alerted about a single-family house fire around noon.

Dorchester County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief John Brudzinski says when crews arrived on scene, flames were coming out of every window.

He says due to the magnitude of the fire, crews reverted to a “defensive operation,” meaning they only put the flames out from the outside as it was too unsafe to go inside the home.

Brudzinski says no one was at home at the time of the fire except three dogs and a cat, who all died in the flames. The mother-in-law suite detached from the home suffered damage and the rest of the home is no longer salvageable.

The Red Cross is assisting the family for the time being.

Crews were still bringing in water with tankers as of around 2:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Dorchester County Fire Rescue is investigating.
