Sydney Airport’s pet bathrooms go viral around the world

Aussies have praised the recent upgrade to Sydney Airport's pet bathrooms, which first opened in 2020 in both its domestic and international terminals.

Most pets who use the toilets are disability support animals, canine units, and guide dogs, which was upgraded last year.

The pet toilets also include a water bowl, doggie bags for picking up their waste and a tap to washing.

There’s even a grassy area for dogs to do their business.

‘It is fantastic. My dog uses it each time we are at the airport! He is a hearing dog and so permitted to fly with me,' one said.

Another said it was something they would like to see added to all airports around the world.

‘It is great to see more and more places recognise the need, and accommodate for service/therapy dogs and hopefully pets will be able to fly like they can in the USA and Europe.'

‘Bunnings should do the same. It may limit dogs pooing on the floor,' a third added.

At this stage only registered assistance animals can use the bathrooms, but that rule may change in 2025 as Virgin has announced it will trial pets in cabins on domestic flights.

Virgin announced the new rules which will allow dogs and cats to travel with their owners in March 2024.

It will be the first and thus far only major local airline to allow small animals on board.

Virgin's new service is still waiting for regulatory approval but is expected to launch later this year.

Virgin Australia announced in 2024 that it will be allowing small pets to board domestic flights with their owners in 2025

Once approved pets will be able to be stowed away in approved carriers that fit under the seat in front of their owners.

Pets will not be allowed out of their carriers throughout the flight.

The program will begin as a trial on select routes and will cost between $100 and $150 on top of the value of the plane ticket.
