MANILA, Philippines — Taguig City has recently launched an initiative to address the pet waste problem, promote responsible pet ownership and keep public spaces clean.

In a statement, the city government said it launched “Project Linis” at the Taguig Eco Park, Bagumbayan, Pinagsama, New Lower Bicutan, North Signal, and Rizal.

“The initiative aims to promote responsible pet ownership and keep public spaces clean by setting up designated pet waste disposal stations –sandboxes and standees –equipped with scoopers, biodegradable bags, bins, and disinfectants,” the city government explained.

The city government said  this is the first phase of the initiative since they are planning to install more stations in other barangays in the coming months.

The project also include rescue operations for stray dogs, which the city government said, contributes most to dog waste in public spaces.

“To strengthen these efforts, the city has introduced new stray animal rescue vehicles, ensuring a more efficient and humane approach to managing the stray population,” the city government said.

“The City Veterinary Office and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office lead these initiatives, working alongside local animal welfare groups to curb the stray population and promote responsible pet ownership through adoption campaigns,” it added.

In addition, the city will also hold awareness campaign online, community events, and barangay meetings “to inform residents about the health risks of uncollected pet waste, including the spread of bacteria and parasites.”

“The campaign will include a jingle, educational videos, public service announcements as well as stickers and tarpaulins in public spaces to remind residents of their role in keeping the city clean,” it added.
