The collie dog was reunited with his family thanks to his owners having him microchipped.
A collie dog that was terrified during Sunday’s thunderstorms in the Northwest travelled 33km from his home in Boyle, Co Roscommon and ended up miles away in Co Leitrim.
He was only brought back home thanks to his owners having him microchipped and Leitrim Animal Welfare, who assisted, said they want to stress the importance of having dogs microchipped.
Leitrim Animal Welfare said on their social media: “Last Sunday, during the thunderstorm, a frightened collie in Boyle got loose and went missing. His worried owner has been tirelessly searching for him since then.
Today, we received a call regarding a stray collie in Tarmon who was wearing a collar. We were hopeful he might be microchipped, and to our relief, he was!
“We quickly checked his chip number and contacted his owners.
“Astonishingly, this brave collie had travelled over 33km from Boyle, Co.Roscommon to Tarmon, Co.Leitrim since Sunday.
“Thanks to his microchip, he is now safe and will be happily reunited with his family.
“Microchipping your pet is crucial. It provides a permanent way of identifying your pet and ensures that if they ever get lost, there’s a much higher chance of being reunited.
