TEWKSBURY — A mix-up by an Andover animal hospital has the cremated remains of a Tewksbury woman's dog headed for a coral reef in Florida — instead of back in her hands as she requested.

And time's apparently running out to fix the mistake.

Mary Ricci's 14-year-old therapy dog, Delilah, was put down on March 2 at Bulger Animal Hospital in Andover after suffering from dementia.

Ricci told Wicked Local that she instructed that Delilah's ashes be sent back to her. But that's not what happened.

Instead, Ricci said that due to a “mix-up” at Bulger, a “communal” cremation was chosen for the black mouth cur therapy dog, which meant she was cremated with a group of other dogs. This occurred at Forget Me Not Pet Crematorium in Northborough.

Most pet owners who had their dogs cremated in the same group as Delilah had previously agreed to not have their respective pets' ashes returned.

Rather, they agreed to have ashes made into memorials, which are put in coral reefs in Florida, according to Forget Me Not Pet Crematorium's parent company, Gateway Services Inc. in Canada.

Mary Ricci is requesting all ashes involved in communal cremation

But Ricci said she doesn't want Delilah's ashes to go to Florida. She told Wicked Local that she requested to receive all of the ashes from the group cremation, noting she could bring Delilah home “with some friends.”

“I told them I would take all the ashes (from all the dogs in the cremation), sprinkle them in my yard and have a place where everyone could visit if they wanted,” Ricci told Wicked Local. “I would treat all those ashes with respect.”

But Forget Me Not officials told Ricci that could not happen. They referred questions to Gateway Services.

“To do something with these ashes that people were not expecting would be unethical,” explained Wendy Montgomery, Gateway Services' senior vice president of marketing. She said most “pet parents” from the cremation in question are expecting those ashes to go to the coral reefs.

Ricci is asking those who owned pets that were part of Delilah's cremation if they would call Forget Me Not and give her permission to take all of the ashes.

“If those people could call (Forget Me Not) and let them know it's OK for me to take their ashes, that could help,” she said.

Crematorium, animal hospital attempting to resolve error

Wicked Local then asked Montgomery if Ricci taking all of the ashes would solve the problem.

“We are working with (Ricci) to solve this,” Montgomery answered. “I can't imagine what she's going through. It's unfortunate.”

But as far as reaching out to other people whose pets were part of Delilah's cremation, “We couldn't possibly communicate with all of them.” It's unclear how many pets were involved in the communal cremation.

Ricci said staff at Forget Me Not told her that Delilah's ashes would be held for a week. But she's concerned about what comes after that, so she's seeking legal help to ensure the ashes will stay at Forget Me Not until the issue is resolved.

Bulger Animal Hospital released a statement indicating that it was “deeply sorry for the loss of the owner's beloved pet.”

“At Bulger Veterinary Hospital, we are dedicated to providing compassionate care to our community,” the hospital's statement reads. “We are deeply sorry for the loss of the owner's beloved pet, and our team shares in their sadness. We are currently investigating to determine what occurred and are working with the owner to resolve her concerns.”

Wicked Local attempted to reach Bulger Animal Hospital for comment on Monday but was unsuccessful.

“I'm just beside myself,” Ricci said. “They don't have permission to send (Delilah) to the coral reefs. I just want my baby's ashes back.”
