(KNUE-FM) The state of Texas might make a big change when it comes to buying and selling animals such as dogs and cats.

Dogs and Cats No Longer in Pet Stores?

According to KVUE, The Texas House of Representatives is considering a bill that would ban the sale of dogs and cats at most pet stores across the Lone Star State.

Supporters say that this could drastically reduce animal abuse and make it more difficult for puppy and kitten mills to stay in business.

Opponents of the bill say that it’s not going to work like people want it to.

House Bill 3458 to Stop the ‘Puppy Mill Pipeline’

State Representative Jared Patterson out of Frisco introduced the bill to prevent animal abuse making it more difficult for dog and cat mill breeders to operate.

Many of the animals from these puppy and kitten mills are sick or born into horrible conditions.

Lots of them are infected with things like Giardia and even parvo, which is potentially fatal, but they are still sold to customers to make a quick buck.

What Would the House Bill Accomplish?

The bill would allow pet stores to showcase animals that are available for adoption from an animal shelter or rescue but forbids them from receiving fees for the animals.

Also, there would be a $500 fine for each violation for a dog or cat being offered for sale or having been sold.

Although one opponent of the bill says that the state of California passed this same law in 2019 to only see an increase in puppy scams.

As someone who has two dogs who were both rescued, I love the idea of this bill.
