therapy dogs bring calm to court chaos in the Capital Region

Court officials in Rensselaer County are trying out a unique program intended to benefit both court users and employees.

Rensselaer County is one of several courts participating in the Courthouse Therapy Dog Program, an idea was conceived of by retired Supreme Court Judge Rachel Kretser.

The program was spearheaded by Hon. Debra Young, managed by 3rd JD Justice Coordinator Anna Wilkinson, and done in collaboration with Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, just over three years ago, and has since been incorporated four courts throughout the Capital Region with 10 volunteers.

Therapy Dog handlers and their certified therapy dogs visit the courthouse weekly and remain present during Treatment Court sessions, allowing participants to pet and interact with the therapy dogs.

Court officials say it helps create a calming atmosphere during proceedings, ultimately enhancing the experience in court and leading to more productive discussions, while also having a positive impact on court staff and improving morale.
