Did you know there's a limit to the number of pets you can have in Rochester city limits?

Not long ago, I was doing a pet adoption event with Paws and Claws. Those events really get me, because of course, I want to take home all the animals.

I mean, I tried fostering and totally foster failed with both. Meaning, they're my doggos now and that's not going to change.

Anyway, while I was at the event snuggling one of the cutest puppies, one of the volunteers told me I should adopt her. I joked that I already had more pets than allowed in Rochester.

Her response blew my mind:
“You have 9 pets?”

Wait, what??!

Clearly I was way off on the number of pets I thought were allowed in Rochester. I currently have four dogs – yes, a small zoo in my opinion.

According to the city ordinance though, I could totally have a couple more!! Don't tell my kiddo!

According to the city of Rochester website, “No person shall keep nine or more multiple animals over the age of six months within any household in the City of Rochester. The term ‘multiple animals' means two or more cats, dogs, or ferrets.”

“Notwithstanding any provision to the contrary, no person shall keep six or more dogs over the age of six months within any household in the City of Rochester.”

Rochester Minnesota's Rules and Regs for Cats, Dogs, and Ferrets

Do you own a dog, cat, or ferret in the Rochester City Limits? Then this is for you.

Some of the regulations may surprise, you, like how long you have to pick up an animal from the shelter before it's either adopted or put down. Or what constitutes a ‘barking” dog. It's not just barking.

Share the info with your pet-owning friends.
