Mexico Public Safety put out an apartment fire Saturday evening.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 400 block of West Monroe around 5:36 Saturday night for an apartment building on fire, according to a news release. When they arrived on scene, firefighters found flames coming from the top level of the building.
The apartment building had eight units, laundromat and attic. One of the apartments was fully on fire and the flames were spreading to other units and the attic, according to the release.
Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters determined the fully-involved unit had severe damage and about a fourth of the attic was damaged. The whole building suffered smoke and water damage, according to the release.
Although Mexico Public Safety said all the people living in the building made it out safely, a dog and two cats died in the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
