Volunteers needed
Want to help, but you aren’t ready to adopt? How about volunteering? We are looking for long-term volunteers willing and able to give of their time, ideally weekly, for let’s say … forever? If you are only looking for short-term hours or a certain amount of hours for school service, community service project, special interest or others, please come see us, too. For those only needing short-term or limited hours, our volunteer program may not be for you, but we have other options available. We can tell you this for certain … ICAS volunteers are the best and we can’t do what we do without them.
We are always looking for volunteers 14 years and older who can come in-person at the shelter to help, with so many opportunities. To learn more about our volunteer program, visit our website for volunteer opportunities and to submit an application at www.iredellcountync.gov/158/Volunteer-Information.
Books & Buddies
The Books & Buddies reading program is now running. No appointment is necessary. Reading times are from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Bring a book or borrow one from the shelter and grab a stool.
The Books & Buddies guidelines are:
Children of all ages and adults are welcome to read.
Children 15 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Do not put fingers in the kennels.
Do not run or make loud noises around the animals.
Sit sideways to the dog kennels when reading.
One person can be reading in the cat room at a time.
Readers must track their own service hours. Any staffer can sign off on service hours.
To become a volunteer, a foster or both, visit co.iredell.nc.us/149/animal-services-control, to submit applications. All applications are subject to approval.
Fostering
Not ready to adopt? Fostering is a great way to get the animals out of the shelter for a reprieve and a great opportunity to get them in front of potential adopters they wouldn’t see while being in the shelter. Fosters are true lifesavers in providing the tender loving care that the cats and kittens so desperately need for the animals’ best possible outcome. Learn about the foster opportunities we have available. Go to our website at www.co.iredell.nc.us/149/Animal-Services-Control for a foster application.
The shelter doesn’t want the fosters to have to provide for the basic care items needed to care for the animals. To donate, the shelter’s address is 430 Bristol Drive, Statesville.
As for size of dry kitten food, 3.15- or 6.3-pound bags are easiest for fosters to handle.
Vaccines
On the second Tuesday of each month, Iredell County Animal Services provides a rabies vaccination clinic from 6-7 p.m. at the animal shelter. Rabies vaccinations are available for $5 each, cash only. One- and three-year vaccinations are available, and you must have proof of current one-year vaccine status to receive a three-year vaccine. All cats must be in carriers.
Rabies vaccinations also are available during our appointment hours and by appointment only. Only one-year vaccinations are administered during our “appointment only” hours of 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, and you may request an appointment by visiting our website and submitting an appointment form at www.iredellcountync.gov/FormCenter/Animal-Control-17/Appointment-Request-Form-260.
